09-21-2016 // Hazardous Materials Incident at LHS
At 1548 hours, the volunteers at Moyers Corners responded to a fire alarm activation at Liverpool High School in the Station 2 response area. As crews were investigating the source of the alarm, they discovered a vapor and dust haze in a storage room. This haze initially activated the closest smoke detector which triggered the response from our volunteers. Quickly recognizing the potential hazard, crews backed out and prepared for a hazardous materials incident. MCFD crews conducted a brief investigation using meters from our special response unit, Squad 3, to help determine isolation zones. MCFD Incident Command worked with a representative from the Onondaga County Emergency Management Office and requested the Syracuse Fire Department Hazardous Response Team and the Decontamination Team from the Mattydale Fire Department. The Haz-Mat Team from Syracuse FD provided entry teams and additional command support until the situation was mitigated. It is undetermined what caused the reaction in the storage room that resulted in the vapor and dust filling the room. After the scene was deemed safe, the building was turned over to the school district.

The MCFD would like to thank the Syracuse Fire Department for responding with their experienced crews and outstanding resources. Having specialized, highly skilled firefighters available to our county agencies is certainly beneficial and appreciated. Thank you to the Mattydale Fire Department for the decontamination personnel and to all mutual aid departments that covered our stations during this alarm. We would also like to thank NOVA Ambulance for helping to establish rehab for all crews working on the scene.

It should also be noted that we received a call for a structure fire on Shallowcreek Road during the hazmat incident. Mutual aid from Baldwinsville, Belgium Cold Springs, Clay, Liverpool, and other MCFD units not assigned to the hazmat alarm responded and investigated.
