Town of Clay, NY --

At 1:28 pm, the volunteers at Moyers Corners and Clay were alerted to a motor vehicle collision on Route 481 near Route 31. Initial reports from the Onondaga County 911 Center stated a tractor trailer may also be on fire. MCFD Cars 1, 2, 4, Battalion 1, and Battalion 2 responded along with Clay Car 1. The heavy rescue from Phoenix FD was also started to the scene as they were just clearing an alarm in their district. A passing Mentor Ambulance was the first to arrive. MCFD command units reported a box truck was on its side in the northbound lane just south of the Route 31 off-ramp. A second vehicle was located off the highway in approximately one foot of water. Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage. MCFD Rescue 4, Engine 11, and Engine 21 worked to extricate the driver of the vehicle located off the highway. The driver of the box truck was treated by Mentor Ambulance and transported to an area hospital.

During this operation, a second motor vehicle collision occurred in the southbound lanes of Route 41 directly across from the initial scene. MCFD Rescue 3 and Phoenix Rescue 1 were able to handle that MVC as they were staged in the area. It took approximately 25 minutes to complete the extrication on the first collision. In total, three patients were transported to area hospitals by Mentor and NOVA Ambulance (two on the first alarm, one on the second alarm). Also on the scene were numerous units from the Onondaga County Sheriffs Office and NYSP. All fire units were clear within 45 minutes.
