In the spring of 1985, the first scholarship committee was formed by the MCFD auxiliary to benefit a son or daughter of a firefighter, auxiliary member, or rescue squad member.  Scholarships of one-thousand dollars are awarded yearly to outstanding high school graduates that meet the requirements as outlined by the committee. The Moyers Corners Fire Department and Auxiliary are proud to announce the winners of the 2017 scholarships: Emily Crispin and Sara Dembowski.

Emily Crispin is the daughter of Frank and Brenda Crispin. She is a graduate of Liverpool High School, and plans to attend St. John Fisher College this fall, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Both in and out of school, Emily continues to be very active in her community.  Since a very young age, and continuing through high school, Emily has maintained a love for dance.  She has participated in many dance programs, including the Liverpool School of Dance as a member of the competition dance team, often requiring long hours of practice and rehearsals, as well as weekend travel events.  She continues to stay involved as a student dance teacher every week for the last 3 years and helps out with fund raising activities.  Outside of her dance activities, Emily still found time to participate in other music organizations such as Concert Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble, and was a member of the Golf Team.  She routinely volunteered in her community in a lot of ways, including church events and Becca’s Closet where she became the co-president and coordinated clothing drives for less-fortunate classmates so finances didn’t prevent them from enjoying high school milestones like prom, etc.  We are confident she’ll find ways to stay plugged in in any community she’s a part of throughout her life. With both teachers and personal references all agreeing, Emily is hard working, responsible, and understands the importance of putting a full effort into everything she does.

Sara Dembowski is the daughter of Past Battalion Chief Steve & Lisa Dembowski. She is a graduate from Cicero North Syracuse High School and plans to attend the State University of New York at Canton to pursue a degree as a Veterinary Technician.  Academically, Sara has demonstrated a hard working attitude to achieve good grades, but has also learned to balance her time for extra curricular activities including Swimming, where she was on the Varsity Swim Team, swim club, and even teaching swim lessons at the YMCA.  Sara too has a long standing history of community involvement.  She has volunteered with the Ronald McDonald Glitter Gala, with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald Foundation, as well as an active member of her church in events such as food drives, food distribution to less fortunate, and more.  She has also been involved with events through the girl scouts program such as Helping Hounds dog rescue for many years and numerous programs that assist the elderly. Sara is described in all the reference letters as an attentive, genuine, outgoing leader, with a contagious smile.  Whether demonstrating her ability to take charge during emergencies as a pool lifeguard or leading group-work assignments at school to make sure all tasks are completed on time and correctly, she shines among both her peers and adults around her.  One of the reference letters sums up who Sara is very well by saying: “Sara Dembowski is the definition of a true leader and is ready to meet life head on.  While life may bring her challenges along the way, there is no doubt in my mind that she will tackle them with empathy, compassion, leadership, and charisma.”

Both of these girls represent and demonstrate the values their parents instilled in them from a young age, and strive to help others wherever they are and whatever they are doing. To both of you, the Members of the MCFD and Auxiliary wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.  Work hard, chase your dreams, and we look forward to hearing from you on your successes in college!  Congratulations to each of you.
